Russian state media reported Monday that a student was detained after he held around two dozen teenagers hostage in a biology classroom at a school in Moscow before being "neutralized" by police.
The gunman was said initially to be a father of a student at the school but was later confirmed as a pupil.
The unnamed student burst into the school and shot and killed a school guard and a teacher. A police officer was wounded in the incident.
The student's motives were not immediately clear, but the situation was said to be diffused in part by help from the gunman's father. The student has been handed over to investigators, the Interfax news agency reported.
Russia's interior ministry said that children in school No. 263 have been released and that none of the children were wounded.
The incident comes at a time when authorities in Russia are on high alert in the run up to the Winter Olympics that begin later this month, but early suggestions indicate that Monday's shooting is an isolated one and not related to terror-related threats that have been overshadowing the start of the Games in Sochi.
