COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell is proposing tougher laws to combat prescription drug abuse and trafficking in South Carolina.

McConnell has scheduled a news conference in Columbia on Thursday to discuss the issue. He says the new legislation will clarify state law making it illegal for people to possess prescription drugs not prescribed to them and establishing tougher penalties for violators.

McConnell says the legislation will also address the concerns of the state's older residents who could suffer medical problems if they are deprived of their medications.

McConnell says that older residents are often targeted for prescription drug theft because people tend to take more medications as they age.
